Station Camp's Van Huss Wins Outstanding History Teacher Award

Station Camp High School social studies teacher, Drew Van Huss, can add state winner to his list of accomplishments. Van Huss has been named Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) state chapter.

Van Huss began his teaching career at SCHS in January 2011 and has taught United States History, World History, United States Government and Civics, Advanced Placement Human Geography, Current American Issues, Ancient History and Sociology.

Station Camp Teacher Receives Accolades for Using Tech During COVID-19

There’s no exact strategy for unprecented scenarios like the coronavirus, which is why one Middle Tennessee teacher is turning to technology as a way to alleviate stress and inform future students.

“I teach social studies and history classes at Station Camp High School in Gallatin,” explained Drew Van Huss.

Van Huss is encouraging fellow teachers to approach quarantine education with honest hands-on videos in a coronavirus time capsule project.

Station Camp Hires Alexander as Football Coach

Zach Womble in the Gallatin News reports that Station Camp High School has hired Brent Alexander as the school's next head football coach:

The Bison have hired current Station Camp teacher and former NFL standout Brent Alexander to lead their program. 

Alexander, who is from Gallatin and graduated from Gallatin High School in 1989, has taught computer applications and algebra at Station Camp High School for the last five years. 

“His attention to detail is very impressive,” said Station Camp Athletic Director Patrick Duffer. “Considering his resumé, he has quite an extensive amount of football knowledge. He has been around the game a long time and been coached by some of the greatest ever. We are excited to have him lead our program.”

Math and Alcohol

The Hendersonville Standard has the story of a Station Camp High math teacher getting a DUI in the school parking lot:

Serena Cooper, 35, of Gallatin was charged with DUI, first offense after School Resource Officer Thomas Briggs was called to the parking lot in reference to a teacher who was possibly intoxicated at around 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 30. 

Once Briggs arrived, he made contact with Cooper who was sitting in the driver’s seat of her Nissan Pathfinder, according to an affidavit filed by Briggs in Sumner County General Sessions Court.

RESIGNED

The Hendersonville Standard reports that Station Camp High School football coach Shaun Hollingsworth has resigned:

Shaun Hollinsworth is ready for a change.

The 17-year head coach of the Station Camp High School football team announced to his players Monday morning that he is stepping down, effective immediately. 

Hollinsworth finishes his tenure 80-106 overall. His teams won region titles in 2007 and 2013. However, the Bison went 0-10 this season. 

“Last Sunday [October 27] Principal Art Crook and I had our conversation that Friday [against Wilson Central] would be my last game as head coach,” Hollinsworth said. “I have been ready for a change for a couple of years, and I’m at a point in life where you start to think about how many years (you have left). I think I have a lot of coaching left. My mind was pretty much made up this summer, but I wanted to see these seniors through. This is a good group, and they have been a good group since they were freshmen. As hard as this decision is, I felt like I needed a change. I feel like Station Camp needs a change. This was decided a long time ago.”

Athletic Facilities Receive Funding

Athletic facilities at Station Camp, Westmoreland, and Merrol Hyde Magnet Schools will proceed with funding from a $32 million County Bond Issue.

In August, the School Board will be presented with a proposal for expansion of Hendersonville and Gallatin High Schools -- adding 20 new classrooms at HHS and 18 at Gallatin.

No word yet on a proposal to eliminate or significantly reduce the number of students attending class in portables.  Nor any discussion of rezoning to ease over-crowding of schools. 

In other Board news, the School Resource Officer program is set to expand -- with 13 new officers trained and ready by the time school starts in August and a proposal to add officers at all schools starting in the 2014-15 Fiscal Year.
