Despite a $10 million balance that could theoretically fund the Educate and Grow Scholarship program at Vol State for nearly 20 more years, the County Commission is considering a proposal that would significantly reduce or possibly eliminate the program.
Over 5 years, the program has cost Sumner County roughly $500,000 and helped students meet tuition costs at Vol State.
Now, the program appears to be in jeopardy as Commissioners seem unwilling to fund its continuation.
Despite their cautious approach regarding the use of reserve funds for this purpose, Commissioners had no trouble using the same Hospital Fund to bailout the mismanaged county insurance trust.

Frank Freels: Defender of the Status Quo
According to the Hendersonville Star-News, when incumbent County Commissioner Frank Freels was asked about why he's seeking another term on the County Commission, he indicated he is proud of the work the Commission has done in recent years. Specifically, he said,
“We’re the best-run county in the state right now.”
Apparently, Mr. Freels thinks a well-run county engages in repeated crisis budgeting instead of properly supporting schools.
Or, perhaps he thinks the 2012 School Budget Crisis is an example of sound management?
Maybe he thinks the County Commission should continue using accounting gimmicks to balance the school system's budget?
Or perhaps he can explain why he wouldn't support a proposal to use reserves from the Hospital Fund to help open schools back in 2012?
Or, is his idea of a well-run county one that engages in a multi-million dollar taxpayer-funded bailout of a mismanaged insurance trust?
If Frank Freels is going to run as a defender of the status quo on the County Commission, he's going to have to answer a lot of tough questions. If he has new ideas about how to improve the body, it's time to start talking about them.

Schell Seeks County Commission Seat
Small business owner Leslie Schell, who sought a School Board seat last year when Shannon Dunn resigned, is now planning a run for County Commission.
Schell, who has four children in Sumner County Schools, was passed over by the County Commission for an open School Board seat in August. The Commission instead chose Janet Arnold, a close ally of Commissioner Jerry Stone.
Schell will be running in District 4, a seat with only one incumbent seeking re-election. Current Commissioner Joe Matthews is seeking a Court Clerk position. That leaves Frank Freels as the lone incumbent in the race to face Schell and Bubba Angell, who has also indicated his candidacy.
Schell gained community support by actively seeking the School Board seat and attending a community forum to discuss her views. She now says she believes she can have the biggest impact on schools by being a pro-schools advocate on the County Commission.

Flu Virus on the Rise in Sumner
From the Hendersonville Star-News:
Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin has seen its flu cases skyrocket within the last few weeks, too.
According to hospital spokeswoman Rachel Lassiter, Sumner Regional went from having two patients test positive for the flu virus in November to 108 patients test positive in December. On Friday, four adults and one child were admitted to the hospital with the virus, she said.
“We’ve really taken off here the last couple of weeks,” said Emergency Department Director Ray Pinkston.

Marshall's to Hendersonville?
It's possible! It seems the shopping center that formerly housed KMart will be getting a big upgrade and some exciting new tenants, including possibly Marshall's.
While TJX, the company that owns Marshall's and currently operates a HomeGoods in the Glenbrook Shopping center would not confirm a pending announcement, the possibility of a Marshall's in the location wasn't denied, either.
Moreover, the company that owns the shopping center is pitching Marshall's as a possible tenant.

Silverman to Challenge Rogers in 45th GOP Primary
Incumbent State Rep. Courtney Rogers will face a primary challenge from businessman Len Silverman in the 45th House District.
Rogers defeated incumbent Debra Maggart by a 20-point margin in 2012 in a race largely dominated by ads paid for by out-of-state special interests.
Now, Maggart has recruited Silverman, who served on the Board of COMPASS (an organization where Maggart previously worked as Executive Director and now works as a consultant) to challenge Rogers.
Silverman claims his business experience and community involvement will be an asset to Sumner Countians if he's elected to the General Assembly.
It's unclear how involved Maggart will be in the race as she now holds a lucrative position with a Nashville lobbying firm.
